Theatro Municipal, Sao Paulo
The Theatro Municipal in Sao Paulo is undoubtedly one of the most impressive landmarks of the city. As early as 1903, the construction began inspired by the Italian opera. In 1911, the house then opened with a performance of the opera Hamlet by Amboise Thomas. In the wild, but also quite humid environment of the Amazon region, it was not that easy for the Teatro Amazonas. Even back in 1897, the first opera "La Gioconda" by Amilcare Ponchielli was played. Arised out of the caoutchouc boom, even the cobblestones around the building were made out of a sand-rubber mixture. During many years, the building was renovated due to the humid climate and termites infestation. Finally, the opera was reopened in 1990 with Placido Domingo and Marcia Haydee. The Teatro Amazonas reacher international fame by Christoph Schlingensief`s staging of Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman".
